A family known for fine food

Maria's has been part of Nicholson Street, Carlton North, for more than 25 years. The business is well-known in Melbourne for its authentic pasta, from classics such as ricotta and spinach agnolotti to gourmet delights like duck, merlot and mushroom ravioli. Maria's is owned and operated by the Italiano family, who have a long and successful association with Melbourne's fabulous international food culture. Owner, Paul Italiano, says his family ''loves good food''. ''Our Italian heritage has taught us to respect and love nourishing and tasty food. The backyard of our grandparents' house was decked out with an enormous veggie patch producing the freshest tomatoes, herbs and other vegetables so that our meals were rich in flavour. ''Our family have been a key supplier of select foods to the retail and food service industry for decades. Our origins date back to the 1930s, when my grandfather established The Perfect Cheese Company. This was the first company to make and supply the fantastic Italian cheeses that are now part of our staple foods in Australia.'' After selling Perfect Cheese, the family business shifted its focus to pasta and sauces with Maria's Pasta which has been operating since the 1980s. Maria's also sells Serendipity Ice Cream which Mr Italiano says is ''Australia's most awarded ice cream''. Maria's now offers home delivery to a growing number of metropolitan suburbs. Taste of Melbourne
